Quality Crafts return to Calke Abbey
The pretty village of Ticknall is a perfect backdrop for The Craft Show 2010 at Calke Abbey. Included in this years show is a wide range of craft wares and delightful gifts with demonstrations of traditional skills by quality craftspeople including Victoria Hall who’s celebrating her 21st Anniversary in business. She’s one of the UK’s only professional hand-marblers, self taught and using many forms of marbling including the unusual ancient Japanese Saminagshi marbling. Victoria's marbled papers are made by floating watercolours on a slightly viscous liquid prepared from carragheen moss, the paper is then laid on the surface to transfer the intricate designs. It’s fascinating to watch Victoria create her designs and leaf through papers whose design might date back to the 1700’s. Other live demonstrations over the weekend will include hurdle making, green woodworking and pole lathe turning.
The show is in its 16th year and there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained throughout the day. Whatever the weather The Craft Show 2010 is expected to draw literally 1000’s of visitors. There’s carpeted marquees and refreshments served undercover too and something for visitors of any age to enjoy including jelly bean juggling, archery and face painting. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore Calke Abbey, set on the site of an Augustian priory, it has beautiful walled gardens, which to this day supply the house with vegetables, fruit and flowers. The attractive estate has roaming deer and a 1,000 year old oak tree in its grounds to admire.
Calke Abbey is just 10 miles from the South of Derby on the A514 at Ticknall (between Swadlincote and Melbourne), turn off the M42/A42 at junction 13 or take the A50 from Derby South.
